Learn Me Good 2

Mister Teacher rants, raves, and comments about life as a 3rd grade math teacher

Break out the parkas

I got an e-mail today through my school server that was a memo from downtown about the summer dress code. In my district, for most of the year, men wear ties and women wear hose. Summer dress code relaxes that a bit. No more ties or hose, it's really more like business casual. Definitely much more comfortable when the temperature starts rising.

Normally, the summer dress code ends on the first of October and begins again around the first of May. The memo today informed us that the summer dress code would be in effect from June 2 to September 2.

This is brand new and utterly ridiculous. Let's forget for just a second that some of us already are working in a classroom that doesn't have functioning air conditioning. Even if my A/C was blasting away perfectly, I shouldn't have to wear a tie when it's over 90° outside!! And it's going to get there very soon!!

School ends this year on June 4, and it begins again on August 25. So according to today's memo, we will get to enjoy the relaxed summer dress code for three days at the end of this school year and a week at the beginning of next school year.

You'll forgive me if I don't order the champagne just yet...

uh...your district has an enforced dress code for teachers? where are you located and what happens if you break the dress code? seriously...

can someone have corrective action written up for no tie/hose(and who says hose anymore? it's nylons or tights or stockings)? can one be fired for flouting the dress code? and who decides whether or not someone is in dress code violation? one man's business casual is another man's overdressed.

Located in Dallas ISD, and we are constantly threatened with notations in our Professional Development files...

But next time someone tells me I can just loosen my tie, I think I'll completely untie it and just wear it draped over my neck...

Wow!  That is one strict dress code.  Is Ross Perot involved in some way?  I guess I still call them hose sometimes but would rather be beaten with a real hose than have to wear them every day.  Que lastima!

We used to have dress codes like that but here in AZ it was worthless.  No one could stand it.  So then came the teacher who was ready to retire...he came in a T-shirt and shorts and a fish tie around his neck.  The admin was mad but the rest of us laughed our butts off.  That finally got them to relax the code.  Now, we are supposed to look "professional" in whatever we wear.  No shorts (lots of them wear them) no flip-flops (many wear those too) no skinny straps, (that one is a joke even for me) no t-shirts (yeah right) and no jeans except on Fridays (here is where I went and bought colored jeans in every color I could find and wear those)  So far, no one has said much to the staff about stretching the rules.  I think teachers should dress nice but I don't think they should be told what to wear.  However, sloppy and trashy?  No.
